4 Reasons to Use Responsive Web Design

What is Responsive Web Design?

Responsive web design is an approach to designing a web site so that it will accommodate devices of various screen sizes and orientations. It makes use of CSS (cascading style sheets) media queries to determine the type of device that the user is using. Media queries are placed in your CSS and query the visitor’s browser to determine its screen size to present the content in a pleasing format. This should eliminate horizontal scrolling and can adjust font size and images to make the content easier to consume.

  1. Be Friendly to Your Mobile Visitors As smartphone and tablet use increases, creating a great experience for you visitors is more important than ever. The latest statistics show that at least 56% of all consumer traffic is now from mobile devices and it is growing every year. If your site is not mobile friendly, visitors are not likely to stay around and consume your content or purchase from you (lowers your bounce rate). Bookmarks from your mobile devices can access the same pages on all your other devices.

  2. Improve Your SEO Google now uses responsive design as a criteria for search engine rankings. Because responsive design is relatively easy to do, especially if you are using WordPress, there is no reason not to do it. It makes visitors happier and Google likes it.

  3. Increase Your Conversion Rate Using responsive design alone will not necessarily increase your conversion rate. But if used with good calls to action and a well crafted offer, all users will have a better experience on your site and this can help conversions.

  4. Lower Maintenance Costs Having to maintain separate mobile and desktop versions of your site can be a pain. Every update will need to be done twice using different image sizes. If you are using WordPress, this is easier using plugins, but it is still easier to migrate your site to a responsive theme.

There is really no reason to not at least start planning your migration to a responsive design today. If you have an older site that has not been updated in a while, these are all really good reasons to start your migration and present a cleaner, modern and overall nicer experience for all of your users.
